Our Mission
To provide life-transforming solutions to break
the cycle of poverty, addiction and trauma.
Established in 1954 as Albuquerque Gospel Mission, the foundation of what is now Steelbridge emerged from the dedicated efforts of Arthur Fleischer and his wife. Drawn by their transformative experience at the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago, they relocated to Albuquerque to initiate this endeavor.
Initially situated on First Street, the mission held its humble beginnings as a haven for Albuquerque's needy and homeless population. Offering a sanctuary of ministry, shelter, sustenance, and clothing played a vital role in aiding those in need.
In 1960, Local Union Number 611 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers generously contributed a property on Second Street. Known as the Albuquerque Recure Mission. This establishment served as the mission's home for nearly forty years, witnessing growth with the addition of a separate dormitory building in 1973.
Evolution to the Restoration Center:
In 1999, the mission underwent a significant transformation with the inauguration of the Restoration Center. Encompassing 24,000 square feet, this facility featured a Learning Center, a Courtyard, Dining facilities, a Donation Processing Center, and multiple spaces dedicated to Emergency Shelter services.
Our History
Since its founding, Steelbridge has been instrumental in breaking the cycle of homelessness in Albuquerque.
Steelbridge helps individuals rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society as productive and self-sufficient members by providing safe shelter, addiction recovery programs, and job training. This helps transform the lives of those served and enhances our community's overall safety and well-being.
In 2017, the Albuquerque Rescue Mission embraced a new identity, becoming STEELBRIDGE. Our core mission of "transforming lives through the power of God's love" remained steadfast. This change marked our response to the evolving needs of our city.
At our downtown campus, the expansion of Residential Programs has been instrumental. The capacity to house individuals in our recovery programs has nearly tripled, accommodating 74 men and 26 women.
Adapting to Changing Needs:
Our commitment to community service expanded with the STEELBRIDGE Resource Center (2021 Second Street NW), which now facilitates our emergency services. Collaborating with The Rock (2400 Second Street NW), we provide nourishment to the homeless and food-insecure individuals, minimizing service overlap.
Steelbridge's Evolution:
The trajectory of STEELBRIDGE mirrors the evolving needs of Albuquerque since its inception in 1954. Our organization has evolved to meet these challenges head-on. Our name, Steelbridge, encapsulates this transformation.
